How to Bet on Basketball

Basketball betting is similar to football betting. Tell the ticket writer the number of the team you wish to bet and the amount of the wager. The odds are 11 to win 10 on straight bets, and the team you select must cover the point spread.

Example:
Bet Number     Team     Line     Total
301 |   Celtics    |        x      |  218  |
302 |   Lakers   |   -4 1/2  |     x    |

In this example, the Lakers are favored by 4 1/2 points. The Lakers must win by no less than 5 points to be counted as a winner for betting purposes. The Celtics need not necessarily win the game outright. If the Celtics lose by 4 points or less, they would cover the spread. The “218” in this example is the OVER/UNDER. You may bet that the final score of the game will go over or under this stipulated number. If the combined score of both teams is exactly 218, the bet is refunded. As in football, the odds are 11 to win 10 regardless of which side you bet. Overtime counts in all total wagers.

BASKETBALL TEASERS

In a Basketball parlay, one has the option of “teasing” the point spread up or down a specified number of points. In other words, you may modify the point spread by adding points to an underdog and/or subtracting points from a favorite. We offer 4, 4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, and 6 point teasers. Teaser odds are as follows:

College and Pro Basketball Teasers
……………| 4 Points |  4 1/2 Points |  5 Points
2 Teams    1 to 1           20 to 21             10 to 11
3 Teams    9 to 5          8 to 5                  3 to 2
4 Teams    3 to 1          5 to 2                  2 to 1
5 Teams     9 to 2         4 to 1                  7 to 2
6 Teams     7 to 1         6 to 1                  5 to 1
7 Teams    9 to 1          8 to 1                  7 to 1
8 Teams    12 to 1        10 to 1                9 to 1

…………….| 5 1/2 Points  |   6 Points
2 Teams     5 to 6                  10 to 13
3 Teams     13 to 10              11 to 10
4 Teams      9 to 5                 3 to 2
5 Teams      3 to 1                 5 to 2
6 Teams      4 to 1                 3 to 1
7 Teams       6 to 1                5 to 1
8 Teams       8 to 1                 7 to 1

MIXED SPORT TEASERS

You can combine football and basketball games in the same teaser. In these mixed teasers, the number of points that you adjust the point spread and/or total by must remain in the same category.

For example:

Football 6 points / Basketball 5 points
Football 6.5 points / Basketball 5.5 points
Football 7 points / Basketball 6 points

6/5 Pts   |   6.5/5.5 Pts   |    7/6 Pts
2 Teams     10 to 13      10 to 14              10 to 15
3 Teams      3 to 2         13 to 10              11 to 10
4 Teams      2 to 1          9 to 5                  3 to 2
5 Teams       7 to 2         3 to 1                  5 to 2
6 Teams      5 to 1          4 to 1                  3 to 1
7 Teams      8 to 1           7 to 1                 6 to 1
8 Teams      10 to 1         9 to 1                 8 to 1

BASKETBALL PARLAYS

Basketball and Football parlay rules and payouts are the same. You may combine 2 to 8 teams into one parlay wager. All teams and totals in a parlay must win, i.e. cover the point spread. The payoffs are as follows:

2 Teams ………. 13 to 5
3 Teams ………. 6 to 1
4 Teams ………. 11 to 1
5 Teams ………. 22 to 1
6 Teams ………. 40 to 1
7 Teams ………. 80 to 1
8 Teams ………. 150 to 1

NOTE: Any game or total resulting in a “push” or tie vs. the point spread, reduces the parlay one notch. For example, a 5-team parlay with 4 winners and 1 “push” becomes a 4-team parlay. A 2-team parlay with 1 winner and 1 “push” is considered a straight bet.

FUTURES

On certain competitions, odds to win the event may be available well in advance; such as Conference or League Championships, Pennants, Tournaments, etc.

Golf, Tennis and Auto Racing “Futures” are generally available closer to the start of the event.

Odds on these events may, or may not, be displayed on the betting board or sheets in the display rack. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please ask any ticket writer for assistance.

Odds may change without notice, but payouts are determined by the odds at the time that you make your wager.

PROPOSITION BETS

These are sometimes called “exotic bets.” Proposition bets are sometimes available on marquee events. As an example, odds may be posted on which player has the longest run from scrimmage in a championship game. Any available Proposition bets may be displayed on the betting board, or sheet rack, depending on space availability. Golf and Auto Racing “Head-to-Head Match-Ups” or “Best Order of Finish” are popular Proposition bets.
